30 Songs in 30 Days Challenge – Day 15 – the off-the-wall one

My lovely and talented friend Sarah (see day 1 for link) started this challenge.

I am going to do this the way Sarah did – a song every day and with a few lines about why I like each artist and song, and why it is significant for me. I am as much about the music as the words by the way, so I have to like both if I include a song.

Please feel free to join in this challenge with your own lists!

‘Rejoyce’ by Jefferson Airplane

I mentioned my love of 60s psychedelia a couple of posts back. My favourite US band of the era were Jefferson Airplane. They broke up long before I became interested but I have been lucky enough to see the touring remnant of their spin-off band Jefferson Starship a few times. This song though, was not one even the original band performed live.

Their 1967 album ‘After Bathing at Baxters’ was critically poorly received at the time because it pushed the envelope a little too far into the weird for many people expecting a rerun of their hit album ‘Surrealistic Pillow’ from the previous year. The band themselves admitted there were a LOT of drugs around during the recording…

That said, it did mean a record that was ahead of its time and it stands up really well today.

‘Rejoyce’ was written and performed largely by Grace Slick. Many of my favourite Airplane songs are Grace Slick compositions (including their big hit ‘White Rabbit’). The lyrics and title reference James Joyce’s novel ‘Ulysses’. But for me it is the music itself that really excels, and Grace’s inimitable vocals. Grace went on to have huge hits in the 80s with the band ‘Starship’ but then suddenly retired from music in 1989 after a fractious Airplane reunion tour.

  1. I’d love to see the Good the Bad and the Ugly theme performed live by the way. I just missed out when Morricone was touring and conducting his movie themes with an orchestra a few years ago.

  2. Wow! What a song! I really enjoyed listening to it, her voice is amazing – and the lyrics are quite a thing. ๐Ÿ˜‰ She reminded me at first of Bjรถrk who I really like too. Thanks for introducing me to this Darren! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ’•
