My lovely and talented friend Sarah (see day 1 for link) started this challenge.
I am going to do this the way Sarah did – a song every day and with a few lines about why I like each artist and song, and why it is significant for me. I am as much about the music as the words by the way, so I have to like both if I include a song.
Please feel free to join in this challenge with your own lists!
‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ by the Beatles
I could fill this challenge with Beatles songs! I never really listened to them until purely by chance when I was 14 I went on a school trip to Liverpool – the day after john Lennon was killed. The radio in the coach played Beatles and Lennon songs for the whole journey. I have been a fan ever since and bought my first Beatles album (‘Abbey Road’) a little while after this trip. As I learned more about the band I discovered that ‘Sgt Pepper’ and ‘Revolver were the most most revered albums and so I bought these two next. I thought Sgt Pepper was great and then played ‘Revolver’.
Tomorrow Never Knows is the final song and represents a total departure from everything they had recorded before – into experimental and psychedelic music. It still sounds incredible and groundbreaking now. Imagine hearing it for the first time in 1966 in the context of the other music around. Also remember this is just three years after the pop of ‘Love Me Do’ – staggering creative progress.
For me it started an interest in 6os psychedelic music that has stayed with me.
