30 Songs in 30 Days Challenge – Day 12 – the underrated one

My lovely and talented friend Sarah (see day 1 for link) started this challenge.

I am going to do this the way Sarah did – a song every day and with a few lines about why I like each artist and song, and why it is significant for me. I am as much about the music as the words by the way, so I have to like both if I include a song.

Please feel free to join in this challenge with your own lists!

‘Love is the Law’ by the Seahorses

The perfect follow up to yesterday’s Stone Roses song. After the Roses broke up, guitarist and song writer John Squire formed the Seahorses for a single album in 1997 (plus a half-finished and never released second album).

I loved the Seahorses album ‘Do it Yourself’ and played it frequently that year. Sadly now I associate it with a difficult few weeks I spent living alone and hurting that summer, and I found it hard to listen to again until recently, especially the (great) song ‘Blinded by the Sun’.

Love is the Law, however, is a lot of fun and shows off John Squire’s guitar skills beautifully. It is great to have him associated with a really good vocalist (Chris Helme) rather than the Roses Ian Brown whose vocals were never the band’s biggest strength!

  1. I had never heard, or heard of, the Seahorses. Thanks for introducing me to more new music. At this rate, I’m going to need a road trip the length of NZ to listen to it all 😀

  3. Thank you Sarah. You are too kind! The singer, Chris Helme, still gigs around York where he returned to after the band folded, and still plays ‘Blinded by the Sun’ and his other song writing contributions to the band. Nice bloke too apparently. artist. Try out the Seahorses album. I like every song on it.
