My lovely and talented friend Sarah (see day 1 for link) started this challenge.
I am going to do this the way Sarah did – a song every day and with a few lines about why I like each artist and song, and why it is significant for me. I am as much about the music as the words by the way, so I have to like both if I include a song.
Please feel free to join in this challenge with your own lists!
‘Spencer Perceval’ by iliketrains
A contender for the best gig I ever attended was seeing iliketrains perform to a small audience in my local library in 2006. One of the library staff had an uncanny ability to spot the ‘next big thing’ and for a few years managed to book great acts to perform in the library just before they got famous. (For example – among these were Florence and the Machine and a very young Adele playing a support slot). iliketrains never reached those heights but they were the the darlings of the UK music press for a time. They are still around.
I had not heard of iliketrains before I saw them play. A band from Sheffield who had just released ‘Elegies for Lessons Learned’, an album of songs (each with an animated video) inspired by events in British History. Spencer Perceval was the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated in office.
This was the last song of the gig and builds slowly into a final freeform jam that blew the audience away.
Wow! This is great. I can imagine hearing it in a small gig; very cool.

Glad you enjoyed this one too π
The rest of the album is well worth checking out. It covers a range of stories from the Black Death through to the disappearance of John Stonehouse.

Glad you enjoyed this one Dominique. As a journalist I think you would enjoy the stories behind the songs on this album. X

I will look it up or better yet I will wait for you to tell me about it on your next visit. I did enjoy your story about the amazing ability of the person working at the library. Great post Darren.

Thank you. I think the library has started hosting gigs again – I saw a poster yesterday. Maybe I will check some out. π

That would be cool. I like live music performance in small place. Not too many people.
