30 Songs in 30 Days Challenge – Day 2 – the accurately titled one

My lovely and talented friend Sarah (see day 1 for link) started this challenge.

I am going to do this the way Sarah did – a song every day and with a few lines about why I like each artist and song, and why it is significant for me. I am as much about the music as the words by the way, so I have to like both if I include a song.

Please feel free to join in this challenge with your own lists!

‘Mad World’ by Gary Jules

This was originally written and recorded by Tears for Fears in 1982. Though I was right in their demographic (British and 16 years old) it missed me completely.

The Gary Jules version was recorded in 2001 for the soundtrack of the movie Donnie Darko and, again, I missed it despite it reaching number 1 in the UK. In my defense I have never been interested in the music charts and have never listened to the radio.

I was first introduced to it by my guitar teacher a few years later, and immediately tracked down Donnie Darko after stupidly ignoring recommendations to watch it.

Both the song and the movie really resonate with me.

  1. Oooh this is such a beautiful song, music and lyrics. Thank you for the background info. I had no idea this song was originally written and recorded by Tears for Fears, another band I used to listen a lot.

  2. ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜‚. Nice to meet another fan. My wife enjoyed this movie too, which surprised me as it really is not one I thought she would like.
My favourite character I think is Drew Barrymore’s idealistic but ultimately frustrated teacher.

  3. I havenโ€™t heard this version but I really love it. I always enjoyed the Tears for Fears version. And what an ingenious video. Thanks for sharing this Darren.
